Color Me Hyperpigmented
Hyperpigmentation in skin is caused by an increase in melanin, the element in the body that is responsible for the color of our skin, aka our skin pigment. There are all kinds of factors that can lead to hyperpigmentation, many of which we can’t do a darn thing about.  Causes include various antibiotics, certain pharmaceutical drugs and even pregnancy.

That said, the leading cause of hyperpigmentation in skin is—are you writing this down?— exposure to sunlight. Not only can the sun’s rays cause hyperpigmentation, but they can also further damage and darken already hyperpigmented areas. There’s a double whammy if we’ve ever heard of one, which is why daily sun protection is an absolute must. Regular exfoliation, deep hydration and restorative nutrients can also help reduce the look of hyperpigmentation.
